Wednesday 5/9/2012 an alarm was sounded for the area of 35 E. Queen St at 05:08 for wires. Engine 1-5-1 responded to the scene and kept civilians at a safe distance until the power company could cut power to the line and perform the necessary repair.
Then as Engine 1-5-1 returned to service there was another call for help. Engine 1-5-1 responded again to the same location to assist the ems crew already on scene of an unconscious person. Engine 1-5-1 crew took a reading for carbon monoxide in a building and cleared it out so that the building could safely be occupied as ems crews provided patient care to the unconscious person.
Engine 1-5-1 then returned to the station and was placed back in service ready and able to respond to the next call for help.

Tuesday 5/08/2012 Lincoln Fire Company hosted Ephrata Fire
Company, Akron Fire Company, and Brickerville Fire Company to solar panel
training. Solar panels are becoming more and more popular and being installed
even in our area. Solar panels can create some difficult problems for
firefighters in an emergency situation, because the power can never be turned
off, unless the panels are covered up to not allow any light to hit them.
Members were shown the different key components of a solar powered building and
allowed to ask questions so that we can stay as safe as possible should an
emergency arise involving solar panels. Thanks to Lincoln Fire Company for
inviting us to this training opportunity.

Monday 5/7/2012 started out like any other for the members
of Ephrata Fire Company, as we all got up and ready for work or our normal day
to day life. The first call for help arrived at 12:06 in the afternoon as ems,
police and fire were dispatched to 1031 Pointview Ave for an industrial rescue.
EMS crews arrived and began patient care, as police secured the scene and fire
control spilled fluids from an overturned piece of equipment. One patient was
transported to Lancaster Hospital. The cause of the incident is under police
investigation. Then as members returned to their daily lives another cry for
help was sounded at 15:33 for the intersection of Hurst Dr and Parkview Heights
Rd for a vehicle crash. Engine 1-5-2, Engine 1-5-1, ems and police responded to
the incident to find two vehicle head on collision. Patients were cared for and
transported as fire crews disconnected power to the vehicles and cleaned up debris.
Police investigated the cause of the crash.

Then crews returned to service, to yet again answer another
call. This one however was not someone in need of help, but a celebration. As
the Ephrata Senior High School girls track and field team completed an
undefeated season with the state championship game, a parade was held in their
honor. Engines from Ephrata Fire Company, Akron Fire Company, Lincoln Fire
Company, and Brickerville Fire Company, along with a ladder truck from Ephrata
Fire Company and a rescue from Lincoln Fire Company participated in the parade, driving the State Champions from
K-mart in Ephrata through town and ending back at the High School where it all
began. Great job girls, Ephrata Fire Company was proud to be a part of this
event, and hope that there is more of them to come!

As the parade concluded another emergency was dispatched, to assist Lincoln Fire
Department on an automatic alarm located at 50 Tyler Dr. However Chief Gockley
confirmed that it was a false alarm and recalled the assignment...

Early Tuesday morning firefighters were woken by the sound
of an alarm. A fire alarm was dispatched by Lancaster County Communications for
an automatic alarm at 702 Pointview Ave at 4:49am. As Engine 1-5-1 responded to
the scene county dispatch advised them that they were also receiving a burglar
alarm for that location as well, the request for police response was given and
police arrived on scene to confirm a fire in a dumpster housed inside the business.
Fire department quickly arrived hooked to a hydrant and began the firefighting
efforts. Chief A. Pettyjohn requested to upgrade the original call from an
automatic alarm response to a building fire response, which brought more
resources to the scene. The firefighters on scene were able to confine the fire
to the dumpster and extinguished it quickly. The cause of the fire remains under
investigation. Thanks to the firefighters that responded to this emergency and
did not allow the fire to damage the business in anyway, great job!

As the clouds formed and the rain poured members of the
Ephrata Fire Department were dedicated to learning from the nation’s top
instructors on building collapse. More precisely Captain Weber and Captain
Kiefer attended the Structural Collapse Technician course at Harrisburg
Community College. Captain Kiefer and Weber endured hours of rain, wind and the
unseasonably cold temperatures to learn the proper and safe techniques for
rescuing a victim from within a collapsed building. They spent hours building
supports out of wood called shores in the industry, several different types of
shores were constructed, from the simple “T” shore to the not so simple lace
post shore. It is the dedication of members like these two that make this one
of the best fire department in the area!

Please be aware that even with the little rain this week and the expected rain over the next several days the Lancaster County wide Ban on Open Burning is still in effect and can be enforced with a fine if you are discovered to be in violation. The overall low amount of winter precipitation has caused a very dry environment overall which can cause rapid and dangerous fire spread. If you are using a cooking fire please have a water source readily available at the burring location and a safety screen in place to catch any escaping burning debris.
Please also remember that with any heavy rain there will be rapid and sudden flooding of low areas and flash flooding of roadways. Please use caution and DO NOT drive through flooded roadways. If you drive around a barricade and become disabled you will likely be fined and you put yourself and rescuers at extreme unneeded risk....
